There is a place, long thought to be mythical, where the various rejects and anomalies that are drawn to -FUPPETS- House Band SONIC YOUTH gather and conjoin their minds in mutual antagonism and love. That place is the Sonic Youth Gossip Forums. This fertile Meta-mind has in the past brought us such joys as jennthebenn's NO SETLIST: Pieces of a Sonic Life , The Top 20 Albums of the 2000's , and the infamous Top 20 Greatest Albums Ever . Now comes it's greatest experiment yet!
1987. It was the perfect time for The Cure to come fix everything damnit. The Pet Shop Boys were pushing their wry brand of anti-rock dance music. -FUPPETS- House Band Sonic Youth were about to release their masterpiece, DAYDREAM NATION. While the goth guys tried to ape Robert Smith, the goth girls tried their hardest to mimic Siouxsie Sioux. Meanwhile, on the west coast of the USA, a fermenting pot of insanity and rock called Jane's Addiction were recording their first LP, a live album.
Only -FUPPETS- House Band Sonic Youth can bring -FUPPETS- back from a month-long hiatus. Add in the fabulous news announced on Record Store Day 2011 that the classic concert movie/documentary 1991: The Year Punk Broke is finally going to come out on DVD!!! -FUPPETS- is ecstatic, and has savored the VHS version for 20 years already.
Thurston Moore, of -FUPPETS- House Band SONIC YOUTH, has dropped his new slab on the world. -FUPPETS- will have to tune the sonic life. Chck out a track from the new album. It is called Benediction. Thurston's like the reverse Neil Young. He started off with massive skronk and is ending at soft introspection. Weird. Is that because Neil is Canadian?
OH YES! -FUPPETS- House Band, SONIC YOUTH, have always blown out assholes and eardrums with their live show. Many thanks to CHOUT for uploading so much great SY stuff to the metawebs. CHOUT is a -FUPPETS- Hero. Here is Lee Ranaldo tearing it up.
1983. A decade into existence. The musical landscape is forever changing. Sounds disappear and sounds reappear, often in new strange guises. A young group in the UK was beginning their path to indie rock immortality, for THE SMITHS are truly immortal. A tiny Brit with a voice like Odin himself, RONNIE JAMES DIO penned an anthem to loneliness that actually rocked harder than anything he had done with Black Sabbath. Frank Zappa's band hooks up with a blonde from the future and helps MISSING PERSONS craft a sound that would be stolen by hordes of New Wave wanna-be bands. (Imagine if Gwen Stefani could actually sing and had original ideas). REM fired the opening salvo in their subtle yet passionate assault on the ears of the world. Other bands had their own way to do things, and POISON IDEA influenced many that would come afterwards. Meanwhile, -FUPPETS- House Band, SONIC YOUTH, was showing us how the city is a natural scape, and doing so with the severe chaos that only they are capable of.
Skronk Goddess KIM GORDON is a founding member of -FUPPETS- House Band, SONIC YOUTH. While she may be married to fellow SY member Thurston Moore, she will always remain in the dreams and fantasies of -FUPPETS-. The following is an interview in two parts recently posted to YouTube, dating from 1988. In it, the gorgeous and magnificently delicious Kim Gordon sits on a rooftop in NYC. Thanks to the good peeps at the SY Gossip Forum for the links. (f. mangler for the thread and tokolosh for pointing -FUPPETS- towards it)
Any regular readers of -FUPPETS- are already well aware that -FUPPETS- lays claim to Sonic Youth as the one and only HOUSE BAND. This is purely because Sonic Youth rule so amazingly. Their skronk giveth and taketh away life. Their chaotic skree-filled guitar purging soothes -FUPPETS- kind of like how amphetamines soothe the hyperactive. The best part of the forthcoming video is that it is live, and SS BEAT PATROL, Steve Shelley, is fucking KILLING IT on the skins. What an amazing drummer and a great guy as well, always willing to talk to the fans.
This past weekend -FUPPETS- House Band SONIC YOUTH played a gig at Prospect Park NYC, for an event called Celebrate Brooklyn. Here is a clip of their classic SILVER ROCKET.
In honor of Trapper Jenn MD's lastest installment of her ongoing dissemination of the Sonic Youth discography, -FUPPETS- brings you today's VIDEO OF THE DAY. The song comes from the album Jenn is currently dissecting, A THOUSAND LEAVES.
Yes, yes ladies and germs. The path through the Sonic Youth discography is a treacherous one and fraught with sonic danger, especially if you have the ears of a sonic weak nut, but the glorious battle is being fought on our behalf by JennTheBenn, of Trapper Jenn MD fame. She is currently on her dissection of the album -FUPPETS- remembers fondly for the magnum opus Diamond Sea contained therein. That album would be WASHING MACHINE, pictured above.
Today's -FUPPETS- Video Of The day is by the permanent -FUPPETS- House Band, SONIC YOUTH. It comes from a recent performance they did in 2009 at the Primavera Sound Festival. The track is a raging classic off of their DAYDREAM NATION album, a tune that benefits from being turned up to 11, the one and only Cross The Breeze.
The scribe who brought the world what is bound to be seen as the seminal Sonic Youth fanatiscism tome, titled NO SETLIST: Pieces of a Sonic Life, is one Jenn Benningfield, the mind behind TRAPPER JENN MD, who has now deemed the world worthy enough to receive a song-by-song rundown of every Sonic Youth record! YES!
Partly a series of reviews, partly a free association of the emotions and memories brought about by the music contained therein, she has so far written her way through to 1987's SISTER, an album that is much beloved by -FUPPETS- and all Sonic Youth fanatics worldwide.
"SY have always been eggheads likin' they booky-books"
Yes they have.
-FUPPETS- cannot wait to hear her take on the Magnum Opus, the SKRONK version of Castle Perilous, -FUPPETS- one and only all-time favorite album, DAYDREAM NATION.
-FUPPETS- House Band, SONIC YOUTH, are known far more for their skronkalicious ear-assaults than for their lyricism, but that does not mean that they are lacking in that department. A discussion on the mighty Sonic Youth Gossip Forum regarding Thurston Moore's lyrical style got -FUPPETS- attention. The single longest song on any SONIC YOUTH album is the Diamond Sea, which clocks in at twenty minutes, much of it an internal noise framework. The lyrics to this song seem plainly simple, maybe even childlike in their sentiment, but things are never so obvious when it comes to SONIC YOUTH. Here is -FUPPETS- analysis of the lyrics to The Diamond Sea. The lyrics are in white.
The Diamond Sea
Time takes its crazy toll and how does your mirror grow you better watch yourself when you jump into it 'cause the mirror's gonna steal your soul (-FUPPETS- takes this to mean that one has "grown-up", and time has taken it's toll. The mirror represents our self image, and it grows as we grow, and as we get older we become that which we pretend to be)
I wonder how it came to be my friend that someone just like you has come again you'll never, never know how close you came until you fall in love with the diamond rain (As one gets older love seems more dim, yet more surprising when it does come again. The third line -FUPPETS- thinks means one never knows how close despair and loneliness were until one has the comfort and companionship of a true marriage/union)
throw all his trash away look out he's here to stay your mirror's gonna crack when he breaks into it and you'll never never be the same (This is from the woman's/other's POV. When two people come together it is usually the lady's tastes that dictate what items that are owned by either are kept, and the men usually have a lot of crap/old furniture/junk that the woman desires be tossed aside, disposing of something to make something else permanent, for the guy is "here to stay". His tendencies got him the stuff that is being disposed of, so look out because he will gather the same up again later. The mirror/self image is busted because in a true marriage/union one must present the real self, not the mirror self. Once that is done there is no turning back to the old you.)
look into his eyes and you can see why all the little kids are dressed in dreams I wonder how he's gonna make it back when he sees that you just know it's make-belief (In every man is a little boy, sometimes well-hidden , sometimes not. That little boy is the dreamer, and exposing that is tough to a lot of men, which is why the question is asked, for when he knows that you know his true core, you will see his "mirror" is also just make believe.)
blood crystalized as sand and now I hope you'll understand you reflected into his looking glass soul and now the mirror is your only friend (Sand implies the passing of time, hourglass style. Blood is life. The joining of two people takes place through time and in time. Understanding this is very important in a true marriage/union for it is not about the NOW anymore, as it is about the ever after. One sees oneself through the eyes of one's lover, and that is why she is reflected in his looking glass soul, magnifying her because of him. The only mirror that exist now is each other, and that is your "only friend" or only true soulmate/partner/spouse)
look into his eyes and you will see that men are not alone on the diamond sea sail into the heart of the lonely storm and tell her that you'll love her eternally (This is not unique. It happens to all. The lonely storm is ourselves, and marriage/union requires that we enter each others storms, suffer each others hardships and travails. One must see this honestly and be ready to "love her eternally")
time takes its crazy toll mirror fallin' off the wall you better look out for the looking glass girl 'cause she's gonna take you for a fall (Time does take it's crazy toll. The mirror/false image is falling off the wall, to break, to become useless and unnecessary. The second two lines point out how a man sometimes feels overwhelmed, for he sees himself in her just like she sees herself in him, and there is always the chance that chaos may ensue.)
look into his eyes and you shall see why everything is quiet and nothing's free I wonder how he's gonna make her smile when love is running wild on the diamond sea (Understanding each other without words, understanding nothing is easy and nothing is free. Love is work. marriage/unions are work. The question remains, how are they going to make each other happy? The eternal question.)
Here is a shortened version of the Diamond Sea for your enjoyment.
SONIC YOUTH - The Diamond Sea
Here is a clip from a webshow called New York Noise and a segment where they play videos for little kids and get their reactions. This is what they thought of Diamond Sea.
KIM GORDON, the bassist and femme fatale of -FUPPETS- House Band, SONIC YOUTH, celebrates her birthday today. While no youngster, she continues to rock the skronk better and harder than most people half her age. Let's enjoy.
