The Sun cycles through periods of high activity in which large solar storms appear, many sunspots are visible, and electromagnetic phenomena occur. We are at the opposite of that now, with the Sun acting very very quietly, in fact, quieter than at any time in recorded science, which, for solar astronomy, is just a half a century. News reports like to keep everyone scared shitless so as to stay better sheep and consumers, so they couch this info in fear-mongering terms, instead of just explaining that the Sun cycles, and now it is in a low-activity period of it's Solar Cycle.
