Many of the current achievements in science seem to have no purpose, or use, but that does not mean that people with more clever minds and more new ideas will not find inspiration in such achievements, and go on to create eminently usable and important contributions to our world.
For example,

World's Thinnest Balloon Developed: Just One Atom Thick
Scientists have developed the world's thinnest balloon that is impermeable
to even the smallest gas molecules. Above is a multi-layer graphene
membrane
The researchers in New York are reporting development of the world's
thinnest balloon, made of a single layer of graphite just one atom thick. This
so-called graphene sealed microchamber is impermeable to even the tiniest
airborne molecules, including helium.
This is pretty amazing shit. I have no idea how they manage to move and shape and form something using a sheet of graphite measuring only one carbon atom in thickness! Fuck! That is some wild caca. Nano-technology here we come. There have been countless new developments in that field, and it will soon be possible to use nanotech to repair structures microscopically, in any situation, from underwater, to outer space, to inside the human body! Can you imagine if we could engineer machines that would go into a human body wholly un-obtrusively and physically repair torn cartilage, ripped muscle, broken bones, or even the medical holy grail, severed spinal columns?
This graphene membrane is not only stable, it is electrically conducting as well. No limit to what humans can do people! We are GODS compared to humans of 2000 years ago. How can we even begin to imagine what humanity will be like in another 2000 years? We very well could see the eradication of aging diseases, traumatic injury, paralysis, who the fuck knows what else? Such an exciting time to be alive.
